Cavalleria rusticana, is a one-act melodrama with music by Pietro Mascagni and libretto in Italian by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, based on a story by novelist Giovanni Verga. Considered one of the classic operas of verismo, it premiered on May 17, 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.
