Among all the members of the royal family, Princess Anne may be considered the most stylish. Many of Anne’s wardrobe choices, such as her puff-sleeve dresses, primary-colored outfits, cardigans, sweater vests, headscarves, and neckerchiefs, are currently making a comeback in fashion. The Princess Royal, the only daughter of the Queen, is renowned as one of the most hardworking members of the royal family. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that her closet is filled with investment items that she has worn repeatedly since her 20s, dating back to the 1970s. Princess Anne was an advocate for eco-friendly fashion long before it became popular. The frugal Princess Royal has set the standard for sustainable fashion for decades in a world where shoppers are increasingly encouraged to recycle, purchase vintage items, and re-wear their clothes.

This beige skirt suit with a patterned blazer and matching hat was a mainstay in Princess Anne’s ’80s and ’90s wardrobe. She not only wore it to the Royal Ascot twice (in 1988 and 1994), but also donned it for the Heads Of State ceremony in May 1995 and to another event in July 1997. Many will recall Princess Anne’s composed and tasteful appearance in a sleek black jacket secured with a pearlescent pin during the royal mourning attire customs following the Queen’s passing. As she strolled through Edinburgh, the royal’s understated black headdress, sheer tights, and sharp ebony pencil skirt were all elevated by the fit-and-flare jacket, sculpting a feminine silhouette. Notably, Princess Anne had previously worn the jacket in a peplum design during Princess Diana’s 1997 funeral.

Princess Anne is known for her practice of frequently wearing the same outfits at public engagements. Since 1976, she has occasionally donned a blue coat with fur for Sandringham’s Christmas morning church services. Additionally, she has been spotted sporting the same Adidas sunglasses that the British cycling team gave her at the 2012 London Olympics, and she has continued to wear them for the past twelve years.

Since Italian fashion brand Fendi revealed that Princess Anne served as inspiration for their latest menswear collection, the royal has noticeably become a style icon. The decision was made, according to designer Silvia Venturini Fendi, when she saw the 73-year-old princess at the coronation, dressed in her green velvet cloak from Blues and Royals, a tall feathered cap, and a variety of military sashes, badges, and stars. The autumn/winter 2024–25 collection, titled ‘Town and Country,’ draws inspiration from traditional royal attire for a gloomy winter stroll across the Balmoral moorlands.

According to Venturini Fendi, the collection aims to ‘underline garments for life, not use and throw away,’ emphasizing durability and the creation of heirlooms. Princess Anne adheres to this philosophy as well, serving as the president of the UK Fashion and Textile Association. In her efforts to promote sustainability, the frugal royal has proposed a return to a time when clothing could be mended for a new use rather than thrown away.
