Friday night, in Istanbul the Turkish military launched what it seems to be a coup against the Recep Tayyip Erdogan government, said the Turkish officials. “This is an attack against Turkish democracy. A group within the Armed Forces has made an attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government outside the chain of command,” said a senior Turkish official.
CNN Turk has reported on Friday that soldiers from Turkish military had deployed to Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport. For this reason all flights are now cancelled.
In a statement from the General Staff of the Armed Forces it is said that its leaders has now the control of the government in “according with the constitution.”
That “wasn’t authorized by the military command”, the government official said. The Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildimir made his appearance on a local television Friday night telling people that the military tried to overthrow the actual government but failed. The soldiers was all over across Ankara, the capital city and Istanbul city.
The official television network, TRT, was blacked out on Friday. The army managed to block the two bridges from Bosphorus, Istanbul. There were reported many fighter jets and helicopters flying low over Istanbul and over Ankara. The Prime Minister Yildirim said on Friday that those responsible with the attempted coup “will pay a heavy price. We will never let this go. We will take all measures necessary, even if it means death. […] We will not stray from democracy.”
