President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday announced his plans to nominate longtime ally Representative Matt Gaetz (R., Fla.) to serve as U.S. attorney general in his incoming administration.
Trump announced the move on his social media platform, Truth Social, He described Gaetz as “a deeply gifted and tenacious attorney … who has distinguished himself in Congress through his focus on achieving desperately needed reform at the Department of Justice.”
“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System,” Trump wrote Wednesday. “Matt will root out the systemic corruption at DOJ, and return the Department to its true mission of fighting Crime, and upholding our Democracy and Constitution.”
Gaetz, 42, replied Trump’s post: “It will be a great honor to serve as President Trump’s Attorney General!” NBC News reported Gaetz was traveling Wednesday with Trump and billionaire Elon Musk on the President-elect’s first trip back to Washington, D.C. and set foot on the White House for the first time since he left the office three years ago.
Trump wrote in his post:”Matt will root out the systemic corruption at DOJ, and return the Department to its true mission of fighting Crime, and upholding our Democracy and Constitution. We must have Honesty, Integrity, and Transparency at DOJ. Under Matt’s leadership, all Americans will be proud of the Department of Justice once again.”
Once Gaetz confirmed by the U.S. senate, he will lead several law enforcement federal agencies with more than 100,000 employees, including the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals Service, Bureau of Prisons, National Security Division, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, among many other. Such a powerful role will be one of highlights during Trump’s second term.
