Red tea or Rooibos is a drink with a sweet taste, that reminds you of nuts and marshmallows, obtained by infusing a plant native to South Africa, belonging to the legume family: the Aspalathus linearis.
It grows exclusively in Wuppertal, a village located near the Cedarberg mountains, 200 kilometers from Cape Town, South Africa.
Unlike the black and green tea, Rooibos is completely free of caffeine, so it can be consumed by all family members. It also has a low levels of tannin.
To prepare it, you infuse it for 5 minutes in boiling water, then you add, depending on the taste, a teaspoon of honey and lemon.
Researchers recommend to consume as much red tea as one can, as it helps the body recover after heavy meals. This advice is also good in stressfull situations as it has many therapeutic properties.
Red tea contains antioxidants, including lutein, an excellent free radical neutralizing excess responsible for cell aging.
It is also particularly rich in polyphenols and flavonoids, vitamin C, minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron, therefore it has an important role in boosting immunity, improving the body’s resistance to viruses and bacteria.
Red Tea has anti-allergic and antispasmodic properties, and is effective in gastrointestinal disorders, indigestion and rheumatism, urinary tract, headaches, nervousness, premenstrual syndrome, but also for high blood pressure or insomnia.
