Amid the standoff, U.S. forces carried out a high-risk operation deep inside Iranian territory to rescue a downed American airman, according to U.S. officials and media reports.

Trump said earlier Sunday that the service member had been recovered “safe and sound,” describing the effort as one of the most daring search-and-rescue missions in U.S. military history.

The mission followed Iranian claims that it had shot down a U.S. F-15 fighter jet—the first such reported loss inside Iran since the conflict began—though Washington has not confirmed details of the incident.

According to reports, elite commandos from Navy SEAL Team 6 led the extraction while U.S. aircraft conducted strikes to hold off approaching Iranian forces. The airman, a weapons systems officer, was injured during ejection but managed to evade capture for more than a day in mountainous terrain, using a locator beacon and secure communications to coordinate with rescuers.

During the operation, U.S. forces reportedly engaged nearby Iranian units to secure the extraction zone. Two transport aircraft became stranded at a remote airstrip and were destroyed to prevent them from falling into Iranian hands, while the rescue team and airman were ultimately evacuated using other aircraft.

Iranian officials disputed the U.S. account, claiming the mission—allegedly staged at an abandoned airport in Isfahan province—had been foiled and resulted in the destruction of multiple U.S. aircraft and helicopters. U.S. reports indicated the operation was supported by a deception campaign conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency to mislead Iranian forces.

Trump also said a second U.S. pilot had been rescued in a separate operation a day earlier, with both missions completed without American fatalities.

Lawmakers praised the operation as a significant demonstration of U.S. military capability. Dave McCormick described the rescue as an “Easter miracle,” citing briefings from officials involved in the mission.

“There are so many heroes in this story,” McCormick said in a televised interview, emphasizing the importance of ensuring U.S. personnel know they will be recovered even in hostile territory.

He highlighted the rescued airman’s actions, saying the injured officer climbed roughly 7,000 feet to reach a location where rescuers could locate him—something planners initially thought unlikely.

The operation involved hundreds of personnel and aircraft and relied heavily on intelligence tactics, including misdirection efforts to locate and extract the airman, McCormick said.

“This was a remarkable operation that only America—the U.S. military and intelligence community—could pull off,” he added.

McCormick said the rescue comes amid broader U.S. operations targeting Iran’s military infrastructure, including missiles, drones, and naval assets, as part of efforts to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon.
