On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada will take effect on Tuesday, alongside an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods.
Trump had previously delayed these tariffs for one month after Mexico and Canada agreed to enhance border security efforts. China, however, already faces a 10% tariff on its products.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Drugs continue to flood into our country from Mexico and Canada at unacceptable levels. A significant portion of these drugs, especially fentanyl, are produced and supplied by China.” He went on to highlight the tragic toll, stating, “Over 100,000 people died last year due to these dangerous and addictive poisons, and millions more have lost their lives over the past two decades. Families are devastated, and in many cases, destroyed.”
“We cannot allow this crisis to continue harming the United States,” Trump continued. “Until we see a significant reduction, the scheduled tariffs will go into effect on March 4th as planned. Additionally, China will face an extra 10% tariff on that date. The April 2nd reciprocal tariff will also remain in full effect. Thank you for your attention to this issue. God bless America!”
Trump has consistently blamed Mexico, Canada, and China for exacerbating the opioid crisis in the U.S., with a particular focus on China’s role in producing fentanyl and its precursor chemicals. He has criticized Mexico and Canada for not doing enough to curb the flow of opioids across the border.
