Professor Stephen Hawking has warned that today’s man-made science and technology represent a strong threat to the future of the human race.
Previously, Hawking said the development of artificial intelligence could lead to the end of our race.
Before the broadcast of his lectures that were part of the Reith Lectures series on BBC, professor Stephen Hawking recently said that most threats to humanity are currently created by us humans. The renowned theoretical physicist said that scientific and technological developments lead us in one of the most dangerous centuries ever known until now.
Some of the threats he referred to include nuclear war, global warming and genetically modified viruses, warning that progress can create new threats to the survival of humanity. Hawking argued that the best chance for mankind’s survival would be to start colonies in space, adding, however, that “we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next 100 years, so we have to be very careful in this period of time “.
Professor Hawking’s lessons that are broadcasted on BBC, focus on research on black holes and will also be broadcast on radio. Reith Lectures are annual lectures and discussions that are supported by prominent public figures.
“From my own perspective, we lived in a glorious time and we realized research in theoretical physics. There’s nothing like the moment of “Eureka”, when you discover something that nobody knew before, “said Hawking. “We will not stop progressing, or regressing, so we need to recognize the hazards and control them. I am an optimist and I think we can [do it]. “
According to professor Hawking, the probability of a disaster to occur on Earth is small, but it grows with time and “becomes something almost certain to happen in the next thousand or tens of thousands of years. At that time [of the disaster] we must have already spread into space and towards other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race. “
Previously, Hawking discussed the threats posed by technological advancement, saying that the development of artificial intelligence “could mean the end of the human race.
