In a significant development, Donald Trump has taken a major step toward reclaiming the presidency on November 6 by securing 277 electoral votes, crossing the 270 magic number needed to win the White House. Trump, who becomes the first convicted felon to hold office, claimed to have beaten his Democratic opponent, incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris, who is trailing at 224.
In one of the most remarkable political comebacks in American history, Trump addressed a crowd of elated supporters at the Florida Convention Center and thanked them for his landslide victory. He went on to describe it as a “magnificent victory for the American people” and called the Republican campaign “the greatest political movement of all time.” Pledging to bring a golden age for Americans, he referred to the July 13 assassination attempt made against him and reiterated, “God spared my life for a reason.”
He added, “We are going to help our country heal, fix our borders. We made history for a reason tonight. We have achieved the most incredible political win. I want to thank the American people. I will fight for you and your family with every breath in my body.”
In his speech, Trump also indicated one of his major policy decisions: ending wars around the world—particularly in Israel-Palestine and Ukraine-Russia. The Republican U.S. presidential nominee said in his victory speech, “I’m not going to start wars, I’m going to stop wars.”
Supporters of Donald Trump celebrated at his election night watch party, hugging, calling, and enthusiastically throwing their MAGA hats in the air as the results came in. At the Palm Beach County Convention Center, guests dressed in formal attire mingled with passionate Trump fans, including one wearing a leather vest with the former president’s name on it.
One of the biggest reasons behind Trump’s win was the Republican sweep in seven swing or battleground states, which shifted to a 7-0 advantage for him, compared to a 6-1 score in favor of Democrats during the 2020 election. Trump closed in on a second term after winning the biggest battleground prize: Pennsylvania.
Fending off a challenge from his Democratic counterpart, Kamala Harris, Trump won the battleground state of North Carolina. The former president also claimed the swing state of Georgia, returning its 16 electoral votes to the Republican column. As Harris sought to flip these states and expand her pathways to 270 electoral votes, Trump dimmed her chances by making pit stops in these regions during the final three days of the campaign.
Apart from key battleground states, Trump also won Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida—a once-battleground state that has shifted heavily to Republicans in recent elections. In the head-to-head race in the 47th U.S. presidential election, Democrat Kamala Harris captured New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Maryland. In Delaware, voters made history by electing Democrat Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress.
According to exit polls from Edison, Trump gained increased support from Hispanic voters—who have traditionally leaned Democratic—as well as from lower-income households that have been particularly affected by rising prices since the 2020 presidential election.
Republicans will control at least one chamber of Congress next year, as the party led by former President Donald Trump secured control of the U.S. Senate by winning victories in West Virginia and Ohio on November 6. As for the House of Representatives, neither Democrats nor Republicans seem to have had a clear advantage, though Republicans are now leading with a narrow margin.
More than 82 million Americans voted through early or mail-in ballots, according to data from the University of Florida.
While Kamala Harris called for national unity, hoping to bridge divisions and provide a “fresh start” for the country, Donald Trump warned against the consequences of a Democratic-led future, promising economic recovery and tougher immigration policies.
