Israel has decided to launch a second missile attack on Hezbollah targets in Syria, when the civil war seemed to end. New Tel Aviv’s action may involve major powers in a major conflict in the region.
Just when the war between the two great powers, held by third parties on Syrian territory, showed signs that it might end, another important actor enters the stage again, who until now has tried to remain apparently neutral: Israel.
The Syrian army leadership said Friday that Israeli planes bombed Mezzeh military airport located west of Damascus.
Israel accuses Syria of supporting terrorism and warned Tel Aviv that the act of “terrorism” will have consequences.
Syrian state television said that several missiles launched at midnight from northern Israel, hit the airport, which was used by the Republican Guard and Syrian special forces.
The airport was rocked by multiple explosions, images of which were circulated on social media.
“The commandment of the Syrian army and armed forces warned Israel of the consequences of this flagrant attack and stresses the continuing fight against terrorism,” said an official.
The official statement did not mention casualties but mentioned a fire. Ambulances were reported to be spoted on site.
The airport, a major strategic base, is located southwest of Damascus and is mainly used by elite Syrian troops, the Republican Guards, and was used to launch missiles to former rebel-held areas in the suburbs of Damascus.
Lately, Israel has hit targets in Syria belonging to the Lebanese organization Hezbollah, which is backed by Tehran.
According to leaks, Israel struck the airport Friday because of suspicions that it hosted a Hezbollah weapons depot.
The incident marks the second episode in which Israel bombs Syrian targets.
On December 7, the agency SANA reported that several ground-ground missiles launched by Israeli forces in the Golan Heights area, hit Syrian targets.
Interestingly, in both cases, Israeli forces used missiles , that are more expensive, and has not used the air force. This is due to the existence of Russian interception systems, S-300 and S-400 in the region, imposing a no-fly zone.
More importantly, a few days ago, Israel has bought 50 fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets, two of which have been delivered.
The stealth capabilities of the F-35 planes make them undetectable by current systems installed in the area by Russia.
