Technology has revolutionized communication, information gathering, conflict, and interactions with the outside world. It has significantly impacted our lives and the affairs of war. It has consistently shaped human civilization and its conflicts. We will examine the complex effects of technology on both civilian life and warfare.
Human Impact
The way of living has been completely changed by the impact of technology on human life. It has brought us to a point where previously unthinkable events are commonplace. Technology has fundamentally altered our way of life, altering everything from how we communicate to how we generate new ideas. The younger generation is now growing up surrounded by technology and learning a variety of things from their tablets, laptops, phones, smart televisions, and home appliances. It’s incorporated into our daily lives to the point where most can’t live without it. Technology has provided flexibility and comfort where everything is easily accessible, however, it has its negatives such as affecting human’s mental and physical ability to function, or the increase of hacking and fear of technology taking away job opportunities.
Cyber Warfare
A cyberattack or series of cyberattacks directed against a nation or state to obtain a military or strategic advantage is referred to as cyberwarfare. Cyberwarfare usually entails breaking into or damaging networks, destroying infrastructure, and interfering with the activities of institutions and organizations that are essential to the interests of the target country.
According to research from Avast, similar to traditional warfare, the primary goal of cyber warfare is to destabilize the nation by eroding political stability, social cohesiveness, and military-industrial capability. Digital warfare has increased at an unprecedented rate since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. In addition to the continuing hostilities, wiper malware has been widely used to target Ukrainian enterprises.
Influence on Warfare
According to defense bridge, in response to the challenges of modern warfare, new technologies are being developed as the nature of warfare changes and gets more complex. Armed forces technology is employing cyberwarfare and artificial intelligence (AI) to advance weaponry and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The development of cutting-edge technologies in recent years has had a significant impact on international politics and warfare.
Recently, Elon Musk and the Israeli government have reached an agreement over the use of Starlink satellite services in Gaza. According to Space.com, Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter) on October 28 that “internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza” would have access to Starlink. On X, Israeli Minister of Communications Shlomo Karhi responded by saying that Starlink would only be used by Hamas for “terrorist activities.”
“There is no doubt about it, we know it, and Musk knows it,” Karhi stated.
But on Monday, Nov. 27, after their meeting, Karhi took to X and said, “Starlink satellite units can only be operated in Israel with the approval of the Israeli Ministry of Communications, including the Gaza Strip.”
However, this would not be the company’s first time providing services to countries in conflict. Following Russia’s invasion of the country, Starlink satellite internet services have been used to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
In conclusion, technology will always have an evolving effect on human society and armed conflicts as it develops at an extraordinary rate.
