East Prussia was a province that belonged to Germany until the end of the Second World War. After the conflict, its territory was divided between Poland and Russia, and much of the German population was displaced. Today, the northern region—now part of Russia—is inhabited mainly by Russians, while the southern part, which became part of Poland, is populated primarily by Poles.
This video is particularly interesting because it allows us to hear an echo from the past of a province that no longer exists. Through its musical arrangement, built around strings and choir, the piece creates a deep and evocative atmosphere. The music is not only beautiful; it also serves as a window into a region that has disappeared from the map, yet remains alive in cultural memory.
In the same way, its lyrics transport us to landscapes and moments of history that today remain almost forgotten by the passage of time.
Below is the song’s lyrics translated into English:
Land of dark forests
and crystal-clear lakes,
across the wide fields
bright wonders pass.
Strong farmers stride
behind horse and plow,
over the breadth of the fields
the flights of birds sweep by.
Day has dawned
over lagoon and moor,
light has begun
rising in the East.
And the seas are roaring
the chorale of time,
while elk stand and listen
into eternity.
