Sometimes a landscape painting is anything but a landscape painting.
This is a film about José María Velasco, an artist specializing in incredibly detailed landscapes, who was once a household name, but is now virtually unknown outside of his native Mexico.
When thinking about Mexican nationalism and cultural identity, figures such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera often come to the forefront. Their iconic works have become synonymous with Mexican art. However, Velasco’s landscapes, particularly that of the Valley of Mexico, are often overlooked in these discussions.
The exhibition: José María Velasco, A View of Mexico. It will be presented at the National Gallery in London, Sunley Room. Until 17 August 2025
