On Saturday, 7th of August 2021, the US recorded its highest number of Covid-19 cases in day since the winter wave in 2020. This new high of over 100,000 cases a day is one of the results of the fast-spreading Delta variant of the virus that has been scourging the world afresh over the last few months. Many states all over the country are suffering from this unexpected surge of resistant Covid-19 infections as hospitals battle the overwhelming number of daily cases and deaths. However, the South seems to be the worst hit in this new wave as many states such as Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky have recorded the highest number of cases in the last week as reported by the CDC.

Many states all over the country are suffering from this unexpected surge of resistant Covid-19 infections as hospitals battle the overwhelming number of daily cases and deaths. However, the South seems to be the worst hit in this new wave as many states such as Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky have recorded the highest number of cases in the last week as reported by the CDC.

The US which has had a total of over 35.8 million cases and over 600 thousand deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in 2019 seems to be having great difficulty trying to handle this new surge. This is however not just because of the biological difficulties encountered in trying to control the spread of the infection and in treating the infected, but also because of many political and social issues that are complicating things both on the federal and state levels.

Governor of Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis who is known to have exchanged many verbal blows with President Biden over the past week over the President’s approach to the Covid-19 intervention. Despite the fact that the state is the hardest hit in the last week, the Governor has promised not to take a step towards a lockdown or mandatory mask use and vaccination saying that they have been ineffective so far.

“On July 27, 2021, CDC announced updated Guidance for COVID-19 Prevention Strategies based on emerging evidence of the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant. CDC recommends that all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings in areas of substantial or high transmission. A new CDC study supports previous findings that B.1.617.2 (Delta) is highly contagious, and is contributing to an increase in cases, including those with severe outcomes and those due to vaccine breakthrough infections. While vaccinated people can still develop COVID-19, they are far less likely to get severely sick or die than people who are unvaccinated.”

Florida is not the only state notably going through its share of health and social crisis, Arkansas is also struggling through its alarming spike in cases. Reports say that there are only 8 ICU beds available in Arkansas as the Covid-19 spike is nothing like the state had ever seen before. Nevertheless, the Arkansas judge has prevented the state from enforcing the mask-mandate ban.

As many states face the new variant heads on, America battles yet another case of the balance between liberalism and the absolute science.
