Golf is a sport where the player strikes a small ball using a club, often over a considerable distance in a scenic landscape, toward a hole.
The fewer the number of strokes it takes to sink the ball into the hole, the better the player’s score. A standard round of golf consists of 18 holes and can take several hours to complete.
The modern game of golf as we know it originated from 15th century Scotland, where it was immensely popular, so popular that it was banned on Sundays for nearly 50 years owing to the disruption it would have otherwise caused to military operations in the war-torn country of old. The game has done far more than simply survive; it has thrived throughout history. Today, golf can be found in nearly every corner of the world.
Golf is often played in small groups, and being a leisurely sport, provides plenty of opportunity for socializing. It establishes a setting for close friends and family, acquaintances, colleagues, and even strangers to get to know each other better. Many golf courses have clubs where members can meet before and after games.
Business relationships are frequently created and sustained over rounds of golf. In today’s business culture, golf is quite prominent and taken seriously. Many business schools have Business Golf courses. Some say that they can get a feel for people’s character by the way they play golf—the players’ habits, level of discipline, ability to formulate and adapt a strategy, how they react in different circumstances, and countless other traits are all a part of the manner in which one plays.
Being a sport, golf offers all the health benefits of a good workout—particularly if one chooses to walk rather than ride in a cart. The game’s low impact movements makes it one of the most accessible sport. One does not need to be in top athletic condition to play. Yet, walking through rugged terrain with a heavy set of clubs results in significant muscle activity and an elevated heart rate.
There are four major global golf tournaments: the British Open, US Open, Masters, and PGA Championship. Winners of the four tournaments then meet at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Today, people of all ages and from all walks of life can enjoy a game of golf. In 2014, 11-year-old Chinese American Lucy Li became the youngest US Women’s Open qualifying player. And at age 64, Tom Watson was the oldest player on record qualifying for the British Open.
