From Jane Austin to Bridgerton, ‘society season’ has always been a fascination for many. Alan Whicker looked at the centuries-old traditional party season of Britain’s elite, when young women, from prestigious families, were launched into high society through balls and dinner parties. “Mingling the offspring of dukes, Americans, politicians and businessmen and bringing rich profits to photographers, musicians, dressmakers, finishing schools, florists, caterers, publicity men and blue-haired Knightsbridge widows with contacts.” Whicker spoke to a group of previous debutantes who’ve been through it all, including previous ‘Deb of the Year’, Miss Judy Huxtable. This clip is from Tonight, originally broadcast 04 Apr 1962.
